Delightful Snow

As I sat at my desk and looked out the window at the fluffy clouds in the sky, I was reminded of a conversation with a friend a few years ago. She told me the area east of us in Texas had gotten snow, and we had not even seen a drop of rain. At that time, I felt a little twinge of sadness because I love to see snow. It brings wonderful memories and its whiteness gives the sense of purity. I asked the Lord if He could possibly push the clouds of snowflakes my way. The next day, He brought me snow! I looked out and a giggle welled up inside me as I thought of the goodness of our Lord and how He delights in bringing good things to me, even when I least expect it. “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change” (James 1:17 ESV).

I looked at the one inch of snow mounded on the poolside chairs and the Lord reminded me how each snowflake that comprised the layers of snow were unique in their design. No two snowflakes were alike. All those millions of flakes are different. As a unit they didn’t look different, yet they served the same purpose: to bring beauty. When they melt, they bring living water to the thirsty ground.

Isn’t that us?  We are all so unique in our design that no two of us are alike in our talents and gifts. When people look at believers, hopefully they see the commonality of serving a purpose for our Lord. Yet when we are seen as individuals, our uniqueness unfolds. Together, we serve a purpose to bring life-giving water to those who are thirsty. We are designed to bring refreshment to the soul.

Snow is so white and cleansing.  As I viewed the snow dusting the earth, I read in Daniel 12:10:

“Many shall purify themselves, and make themselves white and be refined.”

That speaks of us. Another scripture runs along this same line

“He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments” (Revelations 3:5 NKJ).

When I became a believer, a pastor told me that when Jesus put the white robe of righteousness on me, all those filthy rags were shed, and the beautiful snow-white robe was all our Lord saw.

“I am overwhelmed with joy in the LORD my God! For he has dressed me with the clothing of salvation and draped me in a robe of righteousness. I am like a bridegroom in his wedding suit or a bride with her jewels” (Isaiah 61:10 NLT).

Are you walking with that snow-white robe of righteousness on, or are you still trying to place those filthy rags back on, which are lies from the enemy? Drop those filthy rags and be honored to wear a snow-white robe of righteousness, because it is a free gift from the Father.

The glistening robes shall be theirs; each shall receive it” (Revelation 3:4-5 NJK, paraphrased). “They are robes of righteousness” (Isaiah 61:10 NKJ, paraphrased). They are robes of honor.

Let’s bow and pray:

Lord, I know that when I came to know you as my Lord and Savior, you put that snow-white robe of righteousness around my shoulders and discarded my filthy rags. Forgive me that I sometimes try to put those filthy rags back on due to pride, shame, insecurity, wrong relationships, and so on. I desire to walk with that snow-white robe draped over me. I ask that You remind me when I begin to discard it. The snow-white robe shows me of Your goodness in creating me uniquely and with a purpose.  Help me to walk uprightly before You. Amen.

Jan Grubbs
I’m a Bible teacher, author, and speaker, and I am passionate about connecting women to Jesus.

When I was growing up, my dad used to say, “Every day is a new day to Jan,” and it’s true. No matter what happened the day before, every day is new to me. Like you, I’ve had some great highs and some very difficult lows. In those hard times, Jesus always holds and comforts me.

If you would have told my mother I would become a writer, she would have gotten so tickled. She was a very particular English teacher, and everything I wrote made her want to pull her hair out! I was a “life is a bowl of cherries” kind of a girl. Fun, carefree, and the life of the party, I met my straight-laced, Baptist future husband at 18. We married at 20 and began going to church. I went through the motions, but I became a true believer at 24.

I love teaching women the Bible and seeing the light bulb come on. One time, I was preparing to speak to a group of women leaders, when I asked the Lord what to teach on. Immediately, He gave me the picture of us being the Bride of Christ. I am a hopeless romantic, so this spoke to my heart. I dove into studying Jesus as our Bridegroom, and it wooed me into a more intimate relationship with Him.

My husband always says I am full of surprises. No one is as surprised as we are that I’m writing, but Jesus isn’t surprised. He took my love for Him, my love for the Word, my love for women, and turned it into this ministry.

Each of us has hidden qualities that Jesus is waiting to bring out. As you linger here and enjoy my writing, I hope you come to understand Jesus as your Bridegroom and the depth of love He has for you.
